Tūkāpō is the original name of Tukapa Street. There are many pa sites surrounding this location and there were connecting walking trails between these pa. On a dark winters night, a Ngāti Te Whiti Rangatira from one of these pa sites needed to get a message from one site to another. As he was travelling, a strike of lightning flashed in front of him and caused him to stop in his tracks.
Tūkāpō is a 20 unit development catering for whānau with a range of 2, 3, and 4 bedroom options designed to create a sense of community. The development brief was to prioritise people over cars, with the car parks pulled to the front of the section and a pedestrian only area for the 18 units in the main part of the development. Community spaces such as mara kai, shared BBQ facilities, and play areas are planned for this development.
